Under the Procuratie Vecchie: The Duo’s Luminous Sculpture

We are happy to share with you a collection of articles and reviews published online about our participation in the exhibition “Murano Illuminates the World 2024”, held at the Procuratie Vecchie in Venice. This exhibition lit up Piazza San Marco with chandeliers created by internationally renowned artists and architects.

For the duo Fiedler O Mastrangelo, it was a true honor to have one of their works displayed for three months under the Procuratie Vecchie, built in the early 1500s at the dawn of the Italian Renaissance. Very few artists have had the opportunity to exhibit in such a historically significant square in the world of art.

Creating a simple Murano glass chandelier was not the goal; the duo aimed to craft a luminous sculpture. It was not easy to create a contrast with the traditional architecture, but the final effect was surreal. In collaboration with master glassmaker Giorgio Giuman, one of the few experts in the lost-wax technique in Murano, they managed to shape the glass into unique forms, characterized by sharp angles that taper and widen, almost as if they were alive.

This project required enormous effort: every morning, the artists arrived in Murano at six o’clock to closely follow the entire glassmaking process. Once the pieces were ready—often after several attempts—they were taken to the “moleria,” where they were carefully refined, transforming each rough sculpture into the finished piece.

The metal structure supporting the 21 elements that make up the chandelier was designed in collaboration with an expert blacksmith, as if it were a jewel. This structure not only supports the entire work but also connects every single piece, ensuring that the fragile glass experiences no stress.

The luminous sculpture is then brought to life by over 40 LEDs installed inside each element, illuminating it from within and giving it a magical aura. It was wonderful to see this creation under the elegance of the Procuratie, and even during the Venice Carnival, when the masks were enchanted by this extraordinary artwork.

Questa mostra ha illuminato Piazza San Marco con lampadari realizzati da artisti e architetti di fama internazionale.

Per il duo Fiedler O Mastrangelo è stato un vero onore vedere una loro opera esposta per tre mesi sotto le Procuratie Vecchie, costruite nei primi del Cinquecento, agli albori del Rinascimento italiano. Pochissimi artisti hanno avuto l’opportunità di esporre in una piazza così importante per la storia dell’arte mondiale.

Creare un semplice lampadario in vetro di Murano non era l’obiettivo: il duo ha voluto realizzare una vera e propria scultura luminosa. Non è stato facile dialogare in contrasto con l’architettura tradizionale circostante, ma l’effetto finale è stato surreale. Con la collaborazione del maestro vetraio Giorgio Giuman, uno dei pochi esperti della tecnica della cera persa a Murano, è stato possibile plasmare il vetro in forme uniche, caratterizzate da angoli appuntiti che si assottigliano e si allargano, quasi come fossero vive.

Questo progetto ha richiesto uno sforzo enorme: ogni mattina, gli artisti arrivavano a Murano alle sei per seguire passo passo l’intero processo di lavorazione del vetro. Una volta realizzati, i pezzi, spesso dopo più tentativi, venivano portati in moleria, dove venivano rifiniti con estrema cura, trasformando ogni scultura grezza nel pezzo finito.

La struttura metallica che sostiene i 21 elementi che compongono il lampadario è stata studiata in collaborazione con un fabbro esperto, come se si trattasse di un gioiello. Questa struttura non solo sorregge l’intera opera, ma connette ogni singolo pezzo, garantendo che il vetro, così fragile, non subisca alcuna sollecitazione.

La scultura luminosa è poi animata da oltre 40 LED inseriti all’interno di ogni elemento, così da illuminarla dall’interno e conferirle un’aura magica. È stato splendido vedere questa creazione sotto l’eleganza delle Procuratie, e anche durante il Carnevale di Venezia, quando le maschere rimanevano incantate davanti a questa singolare opera d’arte.
